Your engine serial number prefix decides which C-15 ECM you need
The engine serial number prefix on your Caterpillar C-15 is what determines which module gets built for you. Six prefixes are covered on this page:
- 6NZ
- BXS
- MBN
- MXS
- NXS
- SDP
These are engine serial number prefixes, not part numbers. They match no EPA part number, and they follow the engine identification number format Caterpillar uses in its own service documentation. The dropdown here labels every option "PN". What it wants is the prefix off the engine.
Read it before ordering. All six cost the same, so the prefix changes which unit you receive and nothing else about the order.
What happens to the module before it reaches you
Every Caterpillar C-15 ECM on this page ships rebuilt, loaded with the latest factory software, and programmed to the engine serial number (ESN) you supply once the order goes through. That programming is done on the bench before the unit leaves, so it arrives ready to fit.
Work happens at board level. Anything that has failed comes off and goes back on with fresh solder. Parts with a history of going the same way are changed while the board is open. Solder joints that have gone cold get reflowed.
Testing is the same on every unit. The module has to communicate. It has to accept programming, and its programming and parameters have to store and hold rather than simply load. Voltage is checked last of all.
Diesel ECM Exchange has no other product line. Diesel control modules are the whole business, which is why a C-15 goes through the same bench sequence as anything else that comes in.
Buying a rebuilt C-15 ECM outright, or sending your own in
This page is the buy outright route for a Caterpillar C-15 ECM. A rebuilt module reaches you already programmed, you fit it, and the old one goes back afterwards as the core. You are into the truck once.
The core is what you take on in exchange. A free return shipping label travels in the box, and your warranty stays dormant until that old module arrives with us. Terms in full are on the warranty page.
The alternative is to send your own C-15 ECM in for repair. Same six prefixes, lower price, and what you give up is time: you pull the module first, and the truck waits while it makes the trip both ways.
Three further routes exist for a C-15 that this page does not sell:
- A new module from a dealer. The part is priced at dealer rates, and it still needs a booked appointment for programming once it is in
- An exchange unit with an upfront core deposit. Money is held against your core at checkout and comes back only once the old module has been assessed and accepted. Where the deposit is waived instead, the usual condition is that your core travels first and nothing ships out until it clears
- A used or salvage module. Pulled off another truck with no rebuild and no bench test behind it, and still needing programming before it will run your engine
The C-15 and the 3406 overlap, and the prefix settles which page you need
Six prefixes sit on this page: 6NZ, BXS, MBN, MXS, NXS and SDP. The rebuilt Caterpillar 3406 ECM lists seven of its own, and none of the six above is among them.
The overlap is Caterpillar's own doing. The EPA's annual certification data for heavy-duty engines records the same ECM part numbers against both the 3406 and the C-15 for model years 1998 to 2001, which is the 3406E to C-15 transition. An engine built inside that window can leave an owner genuinely unsure which of the two they are looking at.
The prefix settles it. Read it off the engine, then pick the page that lists it. The rest of the Caterpillar range sits under one hub.
Do I still need to give you an engine serial number if I pick the "Not Known" option?
Yes. The prefix and the engine serial number are two different things. The prefix narrows which of the six modules gets built. The full serial number is what the unit is programmed against, and it is collected after your order either way. Pick "Not Known" when you cannot read the prefix, not to skip the programming step.
Will a C-15 ECM built for one serial prefix work on an engine with a different prefix?
Treat the six as six separate modules. Each prefix has its own product on this page, and every unit is programmed against the engine serial number you supply before it ships. Order the prefix that is on your engine. If you have already pulled a module and its prefix does not match the engine, confirm the engine before ordering rather than the module.
Where do I find the engine serial number on a C-15, and is it the same as the prefix?
The engine serial number is on the engine baseplate or stamped into the block. The prefix is the three character group that leads it, and the prefix is what the dropdown on this page is asking for. Supply the full serial number when we contact you after the order. One picks the module, the other programs it.
Are C-15 ECM failures a documented problem on any particular engine?
On MXS engines, yes. The NHTSA technical service bulletin index carries Caterpillar bulletin 10020886, titled for engine ECM failures on MXS engines and received by NHTSA between 2005 and 2009. MXS is one of the six prefixes covered on this page. That is a documented bulletin rather than a diagnosis of your truck, so confirm the fault before the module comes out.
When does the one to five business day dispatch clock start?
It starts when the programming information is in hand, not when you check out. Orders are processed and dispatched within one to five business days after the order is placed and after we receive the engine serial number needed for programming. Getting that number back quickly is the part of the timeline you control.
How many C-15 ECM part numbers are there?
Caterpillar certified 120 distinct ECM part numbers across the C-15 range between 2001 and 2011, as written in the EPA's heavy-duty engine certification data. That is why this page is organised by engine serial number prefix instead of by part number. The prefix narrows a very large field down to a single unit.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

Frequently asked questions
How does the free warranty work?
1. We ship your order with pre-paid return label.
2. You return your old computer and the warranty is activated.
Will I need to go to the Dealer to do any programming to my computer?
No. All of our computers we sell are plug and play. They are updated with the latest factory software and programmed with your engine serial number (ESN).
Will I be able to return my computer in the event it doesn't work?
You will be able to return your part within 60 days if it is returned undamaged in its original condition. You will be given the option of getting a refund or exchanging for another.
How quickly will you ship my computer?
Your order ships within 1-5 business days. Please allow 2-3 additional business days for delivery.
What if I don't return my old computer?
It is important you return your old computer. In the event you don't return your old computer, you will have voided your warranty.
How can I pay?
We have a variety of ways you can pay. You can pay With Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover, plus Google Pay and Apple Pay. We also accept Western Union, or you can send us a check or money order to the address below:
