Caterpillar flagged the C-7 ECM as a failure point in its own service letter

Caterpillar published a service letter about this exact engine. Service Letter UEBE0415-00, indexed by NHTSA as technical service bulletin 10172138 and published on 28 February 2020, states that the existing engine control module can cause engine stumble during warm up on certain C7 and C9 on-highway engines. If the existing ECM fails, it can also affect alternator elevated speed operations and cause speed drop out during cold warm up. The remedy Caterpillar prescribes is replacing the engine ECM and then flashing it with the appropriate software.

That is a manufacturer document rather than a workshop opinion, and it is still not a diagnosis of your truck. The same bulletin index carries NHTSA record 10154957, which reports that the -7 injector codes on C7 and C9 engines are incorrectly triggered by the software. Confirm the fault before you pull anything. A call first costs you nothing.

C7S, KAL, SAP or WAX: read the prefix off the engine before you order

The three character prefix leading your engine serial number decides which C-7 module gets built for you. Four prefixes are covered on this page:

Every one of those four is an engine serial number prefix. None is a part number. They match nothing in the federal certification data's ECM part number columns, and they follow the engine identification format Caterpillar uses across its own service documentation. Check yours before you order. Every option carries the same price at time of check, so the prefix changes which unit gets built and nothing else.

Replacement now, or a rebuild on the module you already have

A dealer will supply a new module instead, at dealer pricing, with an appointment booked to program it once it is installed. Some rebuilders take a cash deposit against your core up front and release it only after they have inspected what comes back.

C-7 or 3126E? The prefix settles which page you need

This page covers the C7S, KAL, SAP and WAX engine serial prefixes. The rebuilt Caterpillar 3126 ECM covers six others, 1WM, 7AS, 8YL, 9SZ, CKM and HEP, and none of this page's four is among them.

Caterpillar created that overlap itself. Service Letter UEBE0415-00 titles itself for C7 and C9 engines and then lists the affected units under model 3126E. Caterpillar treats 3126E and C7/C9 as one service population, so an owner can land on either page with good reason.

Do you need my part number, or my engine serial number prefix?

Any part number handed to you elsewhere will not map onto what you need.

What if I cannot read the prefix on my engine?

Will I need CAT ET software or a trip to the dealer to program this?

No. The module is programmed to your engine serial number before it leaves, with the latest factory software already installed, so it arrives ready to run. Caterpillar Electronic Technician is a workshop tool for reading codes off a running truck. It is not something you need to make this unit work in your engine.

Are all Caterpillar C-7 ECMs the same?

No. The four prefixes on this page behave as four separate modules, and the prefix is the thing that separates units that otherwise look alike. Each one is programmed against the engine serial number you supply before dispatch. Buy the prefix your engine actually carries. Where a module already out of the truck disagrees with the engine, trust the engine, because the module in your hand may not be the one originally fitted.

Is this C-7 ECM in stock, and how soon will it ship?

What does rebuilt mean on a C-7 ECM, and what gets done to the board?

The work is done at board level. Components that have failed are removed and resoldered in with fresh joints, parts that fail the same way again and again are swapped while the board is open, and cold solder joints get found and reflowed. Then a fixed test sequence runs. The module must communicate, accept programming, hold its programming and parameters rather than merely load them, and pass a voltage check before shipping.
