A rebuilt ISM module, matched to your engine serial number
You are buying a remanufactured Cummins ISM ECM that has already been set up for your specific engine by the time it reaches you. Nothing gets configured at the shop.
An engine control module takes readings from the engine sensors and outputs the signals that control how the engine runs, with fuel injection timing and the emission control systems among the parameters it manages. Diesel ECM Exchange rebuilds these modules and loads the newest factory software available for yours.
The unit you pull off the engine makes its way back to us inside the pre-addressed envelope packed alongside the replacement. Sending it is what switches the warranty on, and we hold nothing against your card in the meantime.
Six ISM part numbers, and what each one was certified on
Read the number off the label on your existing module, then select it above. The six stocked here are 3103533, 3408501, 3680509, 3681404, 3681405 and 4963807. A label that has rubbed away is not a problem: choose Not Known, and your engine serial number will pin down the correct unit on its own.
Cummins certified each of these against a defined set of ISM ratings, recorded in EPA emissions filings:
- 4963807: ISM 330, 330ST, 370, 410, 450 and 500, across the 2006 to 2008 model years
- 3103533: ISM 280, 330, 330ST, 370, 400, 425V and 500, across 2005 to 2008
- 3681405: ISM 280, 330, 330ESP, 450 and 500, across 2000 to 2002
- 3681404: ISM 330, 380, 450 and 500, across 2000 to 2002
- 3680509: ISM 335V, across 2000 to 2002
- 3408501: ISM 330, 400 and 425, in the 2002 model year
All six are serviced here. What those filings show is where Cummins certified a given part, which is a narrower fact than a promise about your particular truck, so treat the ratings above as the evidence behind your selection rather than a fitment guarantee.
Sellers in this space frequently file these units under a Cummins CM generation instead. We index on the digits physically stamped into the housing, because that is what you can read without diagnostic software in front of you. Running a different Cummins engine? The full Cummins module catalog carries the rest of the platforms.
Buy a rebuilt ISM ECM outright, or have your own rebuilt
There are two ways to get a working Cummins ISM ECM onto the truck, both of them ours, and they trade money against downtime.
Taking the rebuilt unit on this page keeps the truck assembled while the replacement is in transit. You pay more than a repair costs, you hand over the ESN once the order is in, and free lifetime cover begins the day your old core lands with us. The warranty terms spell out what applies.
The ISM repair service inverts that arrangement. Your existing unit is the one that gets rebuilt, so nothing is owed back at the end. The price is time. Nothing can be ordered until the module is off the engine, and shipping then runs in both directions with the truck parked.
Buyers weigh three further routes. None of those is ours. A dealer unit is a purchase followed by a separate programming appointment. A yard-pull unit has seen neither a rebuild nor a test bench, and still lands needing programming against your engine. A deposit-style exchange parks your cash with the seller until somebody inspects the core you returned.
Running an ISX rather than an ISM?
Five of the six Cummins ISM part numbers sold here are also listed on our ISX exchange page: 3680509, 3681404, 3681405, 3103533 and 3408501. That is not a cataloguing error. Three of the five genuinely span both engine families, because EPA filings record 3681405, 3680509 and 3408501 against ISX, QSM11 and QSX15 ratings as well as ISM ones. The other three numbers on this page, 3103533, 3681404 and 4963807, appear against ISM ratings only.
Let the engine decide this, not the digits. ISX trucks belong on the ISX exchange unit.
The label on my ISM module is unreadable. Can I still order?
Yes. Select Not Known from the dropdown and complete the order as normal. We reach out for your engine serial number afterwards, and that figure resolves which unit you need. Worn, painted-over and missing labels are common on high-hour engines, and none of them blocks a purchase.
Where is the engine serial number on an ISM?
Two places. It is printed on the engine baseplate, and it is also stamped directly into the block. When the baseplate has corroded past reading or has gone altogether, the stamped figure is your fallback. Pass whichever you find to us once the order is in.
Does the ISM module need programming after it arrives?
No. That work is done here, against your engine serial number, before the unit is boxed. The newest factory software available for it goes on at the same time. Neither you nor your shop has anything left to configure once it is bolted in and wired up.
What happens if I keep my old ISM core?
Your warranty depends on that core coming back. The shipment includes a pre-addressed envelope and a paid label, so returning it costs nothing beyond the drop-off. Hold on to the core and lifetime cover lapses and a core charge is raised instead. Our warranty page carries the return window and the charge.
Is any money held against the ISM core when I order?
None at all. No deposit is taken at checkout to secure the core, which is where this differs from deposit-style exchanges. A charge arises only where the old module never finds its way back to us. Pay for the unit, post the core, and the exchange closes.
When does my ISM ECM leave your facility?
Dispatch takes between 1 and 5 business days, counted from the point we hold your engine serial number rather than from the moment you check out. Carriage adds a further 2 to 3 business days on top. Getting the ESN back to us quickly is what actually compresses that timeline.
What gets done to the ISM module on the bench?
Parts that have failed are swapped and resoldered, and so are the ones with a track record of failing next, while the board is open anyway. Cold joints get located and reflowed. Testing then covers communication, whether the unit accepts programming, whether programming and parameters stay put instead of merely loading, and voltage.
HOW DOES IT WORK?

Frequently asked questions
How does the free warranty work?
1. We ship your order with pre-paid return label.
2. You return your old computer and the warranty is activated.
Will I need to go to the Dealer to do any programming to my computer?
No. All of our computers we sell are plug and play. They are updated with the latest factory software and programmed with your engine serial number (ESN).
Will I be able to return my computer in the event it doesn't work?
You will be able to return your part within 60 days if it is returned undamaged in its original condition. You will be given the option of getting a refund or exchanging for another.
How quickly will you ship my computer?
Your order ships within 1-5 business days. Please allow 2-3 additional business days for delivery.
What if I don't return my old computer?
It is important you return your old computer. In the event you don't return your old computer, you will have voided your warranty.
