Do I need to find my ECM part number before I order?

No. This page is organised by model year, and the selector asks for nothing else. Most 6.7L Cummins ECM listings are sold by a part number or a hardware code, which is why the question comes up. Here the year gets you to the right product, and your VIN confirms the exact unit before it is programmed.

Why order by VIN when other diesel ECMs use an engine serial number?

Because on a pickup the module belongs to the truck. Heavy truck platforms ask for the engine serial number instead, since the engine can move between chassis and its module follows it. On the Dodge, Ford, Duramax and International trucks we build for, the VIN is the identifier that decides which unit you get. The wrong identifier produces the wrong module.

Could a software update fix this instead of a replacement ECM?

Sometimes, and it is worth ruling out first. A manufacturer service bulletin for the Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel, received by NHTSA between 2005 and 2009, gives reprogramming the ECM with new software as the remedy for fault code P0471, exhaust pressure sensor rationality, rather than replacing the module. A separate bulletin received between 2010 and 2014 records reprogramming as a dealer procedure on the 2012 Ram 2500 and 3500. Worth having the fault pinned down before you pull anything.

What condition does my old ECM need to be in to send back?

It has to be rebuildable. Send it back in the packaging the replacement arrived in, using the self-addressed return label included in the box, and the lifetime warranty switches on when it reaches us. My Ram is a 2017 or newer. Is this the right page?

Can I use this ECM for a performance tune or an engine swap?

No. What ships is a stock unit that restores factory operation, nothing more. If your truck is modified, know two things first: any reprogramming by a third party voids the warranty, and parts used in engine swaps or similar performance work sit outside our return terms.
