A rebuilt 7.3L Power Stroke PCM, programmed to your VIN before it ships
This is a remanufactured ECM/PCM, the engine control computer for the 1996 to 2003 Ford F-Series truck with the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel. You buy the rebuilt unit outright and send your old one back afterwards as the core. Pick your model year and the module ships programmed to your truck. Every option here is an F-Series truck, and the picker stops at 2003, where the 7.3L gave way to the 6.0L.
Symptoms that point at the 7.3L Power Stroke ECM/PCM
The ECM/PCM is the usual suspect when a 7.3L Power Stroke will not start and a scan tool cannot communicate with the module. Three more signs point the same way:
- Intermittent shutdowns
- A no-start after the truck has been sitting
- Codes that keep coming back after the sensors were already replaced
None of that proves the module failed. Confirm the diagnosis before you pull the computer out, and talk to a specialist if you are not sure.
ECM/PCM, IDM or FICM on a 7.3L Power Stroke
A 7.3L Power Stroke runs more than one control module. Diesel ECM Exchange lists three separate Ford products:
- ECM/PCM, this page, 1996 to 2003 F-Series trucks
- Ford Diesel IDM, 1995 to 2003, F-Series trucks and E-Series vans
- Ford Diesel FICM, 2003 to 2009
Every model year here is sold on the IDM page too, and a 2003 F-Series owner can land on the FICM page and be in the right place. The choice is never which year you have. It is which module failed.
What we do to a 7.3L Power Stroke ECM/PCM before it ships
Every unit is rebuilt at component level before it is programmed:
- Failed components are replaced and resoldered
- Known high-failure components are replaced, not just the one that died
- Cold solder joints are found and reflowed
Then it gets tested. We confirm the module communicates, takes programming, and that programming and parameters store and hold rather than just load. It is voltage tested before it ships.
Diesel ECM Exchange works on diesel control modules and nothing else. All of that happens in our own facility, not a third party's. The latest factory software goes on and the module is programmed to your VIN before it leaves us.
Your old 7.3L Power Stroke ECM/PCM is the core
Your old module is the core, and it comes back to us after the new one arrives. A self-addressed return envelope and a free return shipping label travel in the box, so nothing has to be arranged or paid for separately. Returning that core activates the free lifetime warranty on the unit you bought, and the full warranty terms set out what is covered and how long you have to send it back.
Four ways to put a working computer in a 7.3L Power Stroke
Each one costs you something different:
- A dealer module arrives unprogrammed and needs a dealer appointment to be coded after it is fitted
- A used or salvage module has had no rebuild and no bench test, still has to be programmed, and any cover on it rests with the seller
- A rebuilt exchange with a core deposit. Some programs hold a refundable deposit until your old core is inspected
- This page. We take no deposit up front. A core charge only applies if the core never comes back
Every order is covered by our 60-day money back guarantee, and the return policy carries the terms.
Is this an ECM or a PCM?
This page sells one module, listed as Diesel ECM/PCM. All eight model-year options are the same part, each named as a Ford F-Series Truck 7.3L Diesel Power Stroke ECM. Whichever term you searched, selecting your year gets you that computer for a 1996 to 2003 7.3L Power Stroke.
I do not know my part number. Do I need one to order?
No. This page does not use part numbers. Select your model year and the correct unit is matched from your VIN after you buy. That helps when the module is already out of the truck or the label is unreadable.
What do you need from me after I buy, and where do I find my VIN?
Your VIN, and nothing else. It is 17 characters, on the dashboard or on your registration card. We contact you for it once the order goes through. We ship within 1 to 5 business days of getting that number, not from checkout, then 1 to 3 business days in transit. Send it back the same day and you take days off that.
Will I have to take the truck to a dealer to get this programmed?
No. Your module arrives already coded to your VIN with the latest factory software on it. It goes straight in, with no dealer trip and no shop programming step.
Do I have to send my old 7.3L ECM/PCM in before you ship the replacement?
No. Your replacement ships first, and your old module goes back once you have the working one installed. Everything you need to return it travels in the box.
What happens if I never send my old 7.3L ECM/PCM back?
The lifetime warranty never activates, and you may be subject to a core charge. Our warranty page carries the core return deadline, so check that window before you set the old module aside.
I have an E-Series diesel van, not an F-Series truck. Does this fit?
No. This page is F-Series only, so an E-Series van has nothing to select here. The Ford Diesel IDM page does carry E-Series van options for every year from 1995 to 2003, and the wider Ford diesel modules range shows what else fits a diesel van.
